    Teamster Large (35L) Review/Comparison to Pro, September 11, 2014

The large Teamster is Speedo’s replacement bag to the Speedo Performance Pro (the big one, not the medium Pro). The bag has some significant changes for those who are used to the Pro (like we are), and they are worth noting if you are adverse to change like many of us.

While the Speedo reports that the volume for the Pro is the same (35L) as the large Teamster, this new Teamster version is taller and narrower. It deceivingly looks smaller (even his coach thought so), but when I stacked it up next to my son’s old Pro bag, it is clearly not smaller in volume. This design looks better on my tall skinny boys, but could prove problematic for a short child.

The backpack straps appear to be pretty much the same, but the padding/meshy area on the back is a little different (narrower section – only in the middle). Since swimmers generally aren’t carrying these bags long distances, I don’t think this design change matters much.

My only complaint over this new tall/slim design, is the bag does not stay upright very well when you set it down on the ground. I’m hoping once it breaks in (the back seems much stiffer, even after removing the free seat cushion from the back pocket), and/or if we stuff something bulky/heavy at the bottom (towel or shoes for instance), it would likely sit upright like the old style Pro. This seems to annoy me more than my son, since he just leans the bag up against other bags at the pool – or just tosses it on the ground anyhow. If you think about it, MOST regular (e.g. school type) backpacks don’t sit upright unless they’re full. Similar concept here with the Teamster’s narrower design. If this is a deal breaker, you’d better stock up on the Pro before they’re gone.

The outside mesh pockets are a bit taller too, which means a water bottle will actually stay put better (never would stay in the Pro). Most of the other pockets seem about the same. There’s a spot for pens in this bag. Great for your Sharpies for race days.

The handle on top is no longer integrated with the backpack straps – it’s just a stand alone handle – and the top zipper pocket is not as wide as the previous bag. I tend to roll up beach towels so they are long and skinny, and this new design actually works better for that. I can fit two large Costco beach towels now side by side, whereas they would stick out the top on the old bag unless I folded them differently. Yes, it takes a teeny bit more effort to get them in the bag (since the main compartment opening is smaller), but at least you can zip up the bag when you’ve got them in. Folding the towels the “short” way to make them fit the Pro took longer anyhow.

I’m still on the fence about all these changes, but I think ultimately I will like this pack better (thus my 5 stars). My son sure does, but only because he likes the camo color better. Which, by the way, looks exactly like the photo. Dark green with purple and teal and neon yellow. I think it’s a nice gender neutral color.

I would not bother with the 25L unless you have a very small 6 or 7 yr old using it, and don’t mind upgrading in a few years. These bags last for years (they’ll grow into it), and we’ve even washed our old one in the wash machine after it got too “funky” smelling. I bought the large size for my 9 yr old for his birthday. On the other hand, it’s fun to get a new bag every few years anyhow if you don’t mind forking out the money.

The quality build of the bag is excellent, but Speedo messed up on this redesign with actual usable storage space. In theory the laptop sleeve is nice, as is the seat cushion. But in reality, our 7 year old has the original Teamster bag in size Small, and we had to upgrade to the Large one to fit everything she needs for a swim meet. That’s 2 towels, sweats/clothes, large gallon-sized Ziploc full of snacks and other supplies the kids all need while on deck all day at a swim meet.

In this new design, Speedo has narrowed the overall bag and made it taller. They’ve also added a padded sleeve down the middle to create a laptop storage compartment, but by doing so, halved the amount of space available for storage. Sure, we can just use both sides of the laptop divider for space. But each compartment is so darn narrow, you can’t simply pack folded clothes or towels in easily. Instead, everything has to be strategically shoved in tightly or “slide” things down the narrow storage compartments vertically.

Just a bad redesign all around and not practical for a kid shuffling through their swim bag on deck to grab whatever is in the middle or at the bottom of the bag, and not easy for them to repack the bag.

Not sure if I’m going to keep it or not. I’ll do some dry runs with the kid, packing and unpacking to see if it’s too cumbersome for a kid to be able to use. If we decide to keep it, I’m going to cut out the laptop divider to create one larger compartment in hopes that it’ll make things a little easier for the kid.

Not good design Speedo. You took the best swim bag on the market and in the process of making it “cool”, ruined its primary usefulness.
