The Berchirly Military Canvas Shoulder Messenger Bag Leather Straps for 17.3Inch Laptop was sent to me (free of charge) so that I could provide an honest and an unbiased review.

    It’s well made.
    It looks great.
    It’s lightweight.
It would suffice for any gentleman or lady to carry as a book bag, messenger bag or a notebook bag.

Lots more details and then some in the video.

    Incredible Bag, August 18, 2015

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)
The canvas is very strong and comfortable, and there seems to be no defects on the stitching. The buttons, leather straps, buckles and zippers appear to be great quality. I received the XL and think the size is perfect for larger laptops/books. The inner zipper is great for keys while the outer pocket is perfect for the laptop charger and cell phone. There are two pockets on the side, but these are more difficult to get into since there is a buckle (no button) for closure. My only disappointment is that the side pockets are BARELY large enough for a standard bottle of water (and it is still snug). It would have been nice to accommodate different size drinks.

For those who express concern about the lack of padding, a quick fix I use is a $10 laptop sleeve (as seen in the image below). The size of my sleeve is 16.5″ X 12″ (exterior) and it seems to be a great fit for the XL. Plus, I have the option of removing it when I need to carry clothes or other items.

I am very happy with this purchase.

Berchirly Vintage Style Messenger Bag – My Experience, July 3, 2015

    Verified Purchase(What’s this?)

I purchased the XL version of this bag on May, 11 2015 and I have carried it nearly every day since. I bought this to replace a similar messenger bag made by Rapid Dominance, because I was searching for something with a bit more of a vintage style. I researched quite a few different bags before deciding on this particular model. The bag arrived within a few days of my order, it was boxed and bagged inside the box. I was immediately amazed by the quality of the bag. The size was perfect at 17.3″. I excitedly began jamming my daily stuff into the new bag. It easily holds my binder, and a variety of small things that I carry daily. I do not use this bag for transporting any type of laptop, so I cannot speak to using it for that purpose.

Let’s talk first about the straps. The shoulder strap is nice and thick, made of canvas. The aged brass buckles are a nice touch and compliment the color of the bag. I also like the shoulder pad, which has a riveted and stitched leather swatch to pull together the leather on the bag itself, this is a nice attention to detail and aesthetics that a discerning mind can appreciate. I like things that are “matchy matchy” so I really enjoyed that this bag has such a uniform look. I do notice just a bit of slide with the strap adjustments. It isn’t anything that bothers me too much, but I will probably add a few hand stitches myself at some point just to lock them in place. I knew this from previous reviews, and it wasn’t a deal breaker for me. Moving on to the straps on the bag itself, I was pretty shocked at how nice the leather looked and felt. The two side straps actually use the buckles to close the pockets, while the main straps have a magnetic closure, but you could also use the straps themselves too, just by leaving the magnets always attached. Again, the aged brass buckles are a nice touch here, just like the shoulder strap. I like that the the points where the straps are stitched to the bag are X stitched and reinforced, I feel confident that they aren’t coming apart anytime soon. I have a minor complaint on the leather strap inserts, as they aren’t stitched to the bag by more than a small center stitch. I would like them better if they were stitched on the sides. This may be something I do myself or have a tailor complete down the road.

The bag itself is canvas, and has leather corners. This will help prevent wear and tear on the corners, especially if you are going to use this with your laptop. The canvas is nice and thick, and all the seams seem stitched together solidly with a thick thread. There are a few areas that are double stitched, such as around the pocket tops and around the leather corners. It seems to be reinforced in all the right places. I love that the interior is lined in a coordinating brown/tan fabric. That is something that I didn’t expect to see, and it was another great surprise! The front and side pockets are also lined like this, albeit only on the front facing sides. The interior also has a zip closure available for use, but I rarely feel the need to zip it up during my daily use. Furthermore, there is a small interior pocket that I use to hold three pens. It has space for more, but I’ve found if you pack it with some thick highlighters or something similar, you can feel them on your leg through the bag.

The bag has four exterior pockets, two small ones on the side and two larger ones on the front. It also has the above mentioned small zippered-closure interior pocket. The side pockets are large enough to hold Altoids sized tins and perhaps a few smaller items, I could see them being great for charging cables and/or USB cords. The front pockets are larger still, and can hold quite a bit. I have a small pouch in one, which has vaping related gear in it, and in the other I carry various items, a beard brush, a pill bottle, a comb, and a few other smalls. These larger pockets have good, thick snaps to close them, which work great and they stay snapped in. The front of the bag then comes over the top of these pockets and that is where the magnetic closure is to hold the main flap on. The magnetic closure bases are also double reinforced.

I will also mention the strap on the back of the bag, I guess this could be used as a handle of sorts, but seems to have little purpose other than aesthetics, although it could possibly prevent wear on the back of the bag as well, which is what I am going to assume it is there for.

    Pros:
    – Uniform color and pleasing aesthetics.
    – Solid build with reinforcements in wear zones.
    – Color and size options to please most users.
    – Multiple pocket closures.

    Cons:
    – Leather strap inserts may need further stitching to feel confident in them.
    – Shoulder strap adjustments could have better tolerances to hold the strap.
    – Small interior pocket can’t hold too many items without…
