When I purchased this bag I was not sure what to expect due to the lack of reviews, yet when I received the bag I was pleasantly surprised. While I have only used the bag for about a week, it appears to be a good value and is definitely very impressive in appearance. Due to the lack of reviews I found, I decided to write a more in-depth review, please read more for my full report. I was NOT paid for this review nor did I receive any products in exchange for my review.

When I set out to purchase a bag it was as a replacement for my tired old backpack (a trusty bag that I’ve used since college but now that I’m over 30 I really needed something more professional). I decided to focus my search on a leather, messenger style bag that was rustic, yet professional. I was on a limited budget so I knew I might have to compromise quality for a lower price so I wasn’t looking for a bag with $200 quality. I decided on this bag in spite of the few poor reviews I saw, and have so far been very impressed. There are a lot of great qualities and a few weaknesses, as I expected, and I’ll update this in a few months when I’ve really tested it out. For now, the following are my initial observations about the bag.

    Color:
The color on the bag I received was very close if not exactly what I expected from the pictures online. We’re talking about real leather here so there could definitely be variation in the color from bag to bag, which should be expected. On the bag I received you can see variation in the different pieces of leather used to construct the bag.

    Smell:
I read a lot of reviews about leather bags smelling, mine arrived with a slight smell that faded within a couple days. Now it smells like leather…no surprise there…since it’s leather.

    Material:
The leather used in this bag appears to be a good quality leather. It’s thick enough to feel durable yet not so thick that it adds extra weight. The straps are the only part I have not been thrilled with, they are two pieces of thin leather stitched together and I worry that they will wear out pre-maturely. For now they seem sufficient and ultimately time will tell.
The interior lining is a very strange green material. It’s rather rough and likely one area where cost was reduced. I don’t think it would scratch electronics however I would think twice about putting an IPad in the pocket without a cover.

    Buckles:
The buckles are rustic and sort of awkward. I was looking for a bag with real buckles rather than fake buckles with magnetic closures, and while these buckles function, I do have to use two hands to unbuckle them because of their awkwardness. Maybe practice will improve this, we’ll see. For an $80 bag I think the buckles are sufficient and I hope they last.

    Pockets:
This bag has four pockets on the outside, one on each end and two on the front. While these pockets are not huge, they will work just fine for holding my pens, cords, and medicine (see pictures).
There are also two padded dividers on the inside which create a tight pocket on the front and back. I believe this is where the laptop is supposed to go but my laptop will not fit in these slots. Oddly, the divider is padded but the back or front of the bag is not. So when an item is in these pockets it will be well protected from the inside of the bag not from external bumps.
Next there are two zip pockets on the inside front and back of the bag. These are very thin but could work for documents or other very thin items, IPad maybe…
The main compartment is large enough to comfortably hold my laptop (13.5”x9”), charger, 5×7 notebook, Mifi Card, a book for reading, and any other small items that I need. You will not be able to fit a laptop larger than mine in this bag, so keep that in mind and measure before you buy.

    Functionality:
While I cannot fit everything in this bag that previously fit in my backpack, the essentials all have a spot. Since I use this for business I’ll be encouraged to cut down on the junk I carry and take only what I need. The strap is not totally comfortable when the bag is loaded, a pad on the shoulder would be nice but I may be able to come up with something for that.

    Construction Quality:
This is one area where I am uncertain about the bag. There are a couple of stitches that appear to have been made by mistake and then corrected. There are some rivets on the shoulder strap that are not symmetrical (as seen in one of my pictures). Other than that, the bag appears to be solid and well-built. I’m actually very surprised at the quality given the price point. While some may be bugged by the idiosyncrasies of this bag, some of these items add to the character of the bag and give it a hand-made appearance, which I like…

Very disappointed in the quality of the leather! Full of healed scars and insect bites. It’s genuine leather, but very low grade!!

I will add that the seller was very cooperative and apologized and a refund was issued promptly!
