The American Tourister Technum is a mid-weight polycarbonate spinner that packs as much as any other case in this class in a sleek package.

I was looking to replace a workhorse Delsey polycarbonate spinner that I have used for 10+ years but couldn’t find a suitable replacement. I like a 50:50 top and bottom with zippered covers on both sides. Though the Technum does not have a cover on the bottom section, it meets all my other requirements.

First thing that you notice is that the design accommodates all handles and pulls within the dimensions of the case – nothing protrudes out. The top and side carry handles are made of rubber and stay out of the way when not in use. The pull handle and mechanism is recessed to be flush with the case’s bottom. The case is made of mid-weight polycarbonate and weighs about 7.5 pounds. I find this weight to be a good compromise as it light enough and provides sufficient protection at a good price. The 4 pound cases are about 2x – 3x the cost of the Technum. All three colors give the Technum a richer, more expensive look, but the silver with red is my favorite – definitely a classy, modern look.

The inside materials are light (not thick/bulky) seem high quality and feel very good to the touch. All stitching is uniform and most of it is hidden. The bottom is slightly less spacious than I expected – needed to be about a half inch higher, but it was expected since it looks very compact from the outside. All items on the bottom are secured with elastic cross straps. It also includes a 12” x 3” non-see through modesty zippered pocket for small items.

The top section has a zippered flap to maintain a separation with the bottom section. The flap includes one large (13” x 9”) magazine / iPad non-padded, non-see through zippered pocket and two 7” x 5” zippered mesh pockets for small items. One serendipitous feature is that in addition to the zippered flap, the top section has elastic cross straps to secure items – similar to the bottom section.

The case is expandable by 2” and that makes up for the slightly lesser space at the bottom. In fact, I actually prefer the compact look/profile of the Technum that provides ample space for shorter 1-2 day trips and does not look too bulky when expanded for longer trips.

The zippers look sharp and function smoothly. The main zippers attach to a built-in TSA lock which is ideal for the few times the case might need to get checked in.
