I did SO much research before choosing this as a gift for my frequent-flier son. I started out admiring a leather messenger bag by Fossil; but reviews, here and elsewhere, about the fragility of its cross-body strap led me to look further. That made me think about the utility of a detachable strap, so it could easily be replaced — as we know, nylon-mesh straps can get pretty nasty over time; and there are alternatives available with even more shoulder cushioning than this one offers, should that be a concern. As my research progressed, it became more focused on functionality: for example, could the bag fit over the handle of a roll-away? I also learned about the checkpoint-friendly feature that apparently allows one to keep electronics like a laptop or tablet in the case, by opening the bottom zipper and laying the case flat. I didn’t see a leather bag with that feature. (I can’t vouch for the effectiveness of this bag for this purpose, because it hasn’t yet been tested; I’ll update as I learn more.) And leather easily stains or scratches, too. Advantage, synthetics.

Other features to consider: This bag comes with a separate pouch for cords, chargers, and the like — not strictly necessary, but convenient for corralling things that don’t like staying tidy in a bag. Weather-worthiness: the bag, unlike its less-costly sibling, the version that’s not checkpoint-friendly, zips at the top under the messenger flap; that seemed an important consideration. The reasons for 4 rather than 5 stars? (1) It’s not quite as grab-and-go as it could be after unzipping for the airport conveyor belt: both handles are attached to the messenger flap, so that could make it a little unwieldy when retrieving the bag after it’s checked. The non-messenger version of this bag has its handles attached on either side of the top zipper; I think that would offer greater grab-and-go stability, at the cost of style. This is potentially a minor issue, since the flap can remain closed when the bag is laid flat.(2) The initial feel of the bag is somewhat stiff. This may not be a drawback for some, and it may soften over time.

I bought this bag because I have to walk from subway in all kinds of weather. I wanted a bag to maintain an executive appearance over time and of course high quality. This Travelpro does have these features that I wanted. It is very strong, but padded, the materials are very good and well made –looks great.

Con: The size –a bit too small. I almost sent it back; some days I wish I did. I carry a 14″ HP (not particularly thin) laptop and a portfolio w/legal size pad along with computer cables and the like. I would like to ALSO carry my iPad mini but cannot get the bag closed easily with all three. Also, there is a compartment sized for an umbrella but I cannot close the bag even after ordering the smallest umbrella available. . .

So, yes it is a good bag.. . .and IF I carried my thinner MacBook, I suppose MAYBE I would give it five stars but MY standard work stuff is just a bit too tight..
