    **UPDATE Dec 12, 2015 (Purchased Jan 5, 2015)**

So I use this backpack on an almost daily basis for 11 months. I do and have packed heavy books, a laptop, bulky stuff, shoes, clothes, fruits, groceries, water bottles, a gallon of water (don’t ask), and everything in between. This backpack has seen better days but has still stood tough. The middle zipper compartment started to tear first in the inner pockets where there are pen pockets and other small pockets and it just got worse over time (See photos below… all photos are from this update). Then mesh on one of the sides have been tearing since I do occasionally put my phone charger in it along with a small water bottle on top. Then I also do notice that at the very top between the main zipper compartment and the main straps… it is starting to tear due to regular use. Not exactly sure as to why but I just assume that spot has a lot of tension when carrying bulky and heavy stuff. Then up until recently (last 3 or 4 weeks), the main zipper is starting to lose a couple of its “teeth” and making closing and opening not as smooth as it would be. Everything else seems to have held its ground. The handle on the top does seem to have held its ground with occasional use.

I do put a lot of smaller items in the middle compartment and do notice that at times it is a bit difficult to find stuff in that compartment since the fabric is a bit soft and saggy and gets in the way. The laptop compartment seem to be holding pretty good but offers minimal protection on the sides and the bottom. The padding here is simply to separate the main compartment from the laptop acting as a pocket but not much protection. I would advise you to keep your laptop with a sleeve on for better protection since there isn’t much on here.

I will continue updating as I go.

    **Update May 1, 2015*

After 3.5 months of use, this backpack is holding up nicely! I use it almost everyday. At times I do pack a number of textbooks and a dslr in it and it gets pretty heavy. But this holds up nicely. The straps provide great cushioning. No tears or rips whatsoever even with a heavy load. So far, I’m pleased with this product!

    ORIGINAL REVIEW:

I got this backpack for college. I have a 15″ Retina MacBook Pro placed in a Targus tss64000-50 laptop sleeve. It fits nicely in the laptop compartment of this backpack. The laptop compartment is not all that padded. The back part of the laptop compartment is padded while the front part is a mesh material (thus I put my laptop in a sleeve).

The overall backpack pretty nice and sturdy. I love the all black design of the backpack. I’ve had this backpack for about a week and so far so good. I am happy with my purchase.

No Side Protection For Laptop, February 5, 2015
    By

This review is from: Targus Ascend Backpack for up to 16-Inch Laptop, Black (TSB710US) (Personal Computers)
I have used an old Targus briefcase style laptop case for at least 12 years, and it provided excellent protection for my laptop. I dropped it from knee level or knocked it over numerous times and the 360 Degrees of padded computer protection never let me down. I even bought other types of Targus accessories because I thought the laptop case we well-made and a good value.

I needed something with more storage and my first choice was Targus based on past experience. I decided to get a laptop backpack.

I learned the hard way this backpack provides no side protection. The bottom of the backpack is padded and provides protection but the sides are not padded at all. This is a complete design fail for any product that claims to protect an electronic device. I am very disappointed in Targus for completely letting me down after being a loyal customer for years.

I was holding the backpack by the strap on the top and it slipped out of my hand. It did not fall further than knee level and it fell into grass. There was no damage to the part of the laptop that struck the ground and where there was padding along the bottom of the backpack. But the left rear corner of the laptop was damaged where it hit because there is absolutely to side padding! The keyboard bezel, keyboard cover, display bezel, and display cover were all damaged because this backpack offers no side protection! The final repair bill was $450.

I am including a picture of the damage. If a representative from Targus monitors these reviews I would be very interested in hearing from you about this. As evidenced from the damage to my laptop your backpack should offer some lateral protection. The padded bottom did an excellent job, the unpadded side did nothing and this is unacceptable for a protective covering. I would really like to hear from Targus or someone about this.

I grabbed this backpack as a temporary replacement while my Ful Powerbag is being serviced under warranty. I’m quite pleased with it for the money. The straps are comfortable, even when loaded down. The main pockets are spacious. I would have liked more in the way of organizing pockets for pens, gadgets, etc, but it’s again adequate for the price. I do find the vertical zipping pocket on the back of the bag to be kind of a mystery. I don’t know what it’s for or how to use it effectively.

My only real complaint is that with the fewer number of organizing pockets in this bag, a lot of my pens and stuff sort of accumulate at the bottom. Something to keep in mind if you carry a lot of pens, ipods, jump drives, and other small stuff.

If you like making statements, this bag is a great canvas. The outside of the bag is relatively flat and solid black. It displays my button collection nicely, and would make a good display area for patches, embroidery, or other modding.
