This is not 100% leather – at least not what most people would classify as leather. Reconstituted bonded leather or polyurethane leather – maybe – but not cowhide leather. If the main body contains genuine leather (big if), then it must be painted to look like polyurethane leather. The color is too uniform and fake looking. I should have returned it when I first opened it because I just suspected it was not real leather. But, since all the labels said leather, I decided to give it a try.

I’ve had this bag for about a year. I use it daily as my laptop case to take to work & back home. I’ve taken it on business trips a few times. I like how the handlebar for my roller-bag will slide through the back of this bag. It’s easy enough to open and close, and it can hold a fair amount of paperwork or bulky items. There, those are my positive things to say.

Overall though, I’m disappointed in how badly this bag is aging. I mean – just look at the pictures – the binding around the edges is nearly worn through. I was really hoping that for this price point for a Samsonite bag, I’d get something that looked nice for more than 1 year. (“Real” leather shouldn’t age like this!). Additionally, the shoulder strap latch – urg. You can tell from the pictures that this clasp has been worked and is now “more open” than it was originally. So open, in fact, that it now easily slides right off – more of a hook than a latch. Every time I pick up the bag now I have to make sure the shoulder strap is actually still attached on both sides. Nearly dropped my laptop on the floor once because it come undone as I was lifting.

I’m fed up with this bag. I need to dig through my receipts to find my warranty information.

I understand the positive reviews for this bag, it is well made, but the leather just doesn’t look real and it’s weirdly elongated. I showed it to a few friends and we all agreed it’s ugly. The pictures are misleading, which is a shame since I just bought a carryon from Samsonite that’s fantastic.

I don’t normally leave reviews, but given the bad rap this bag has gotten with the two reviewers I felt like I needed to add my opinion. Let me start by saying that I’d been looking for a professional style messenger bag for quite some time and I did this both on websites and in stores so I became pretty well-acquainted with what was on the market and the quality of the various bags and the price tags that came with them. After a couple of months I narrowed it down to this bag and the Samsonite Columbian Leather Flapover. I had at once coveted the Kenneth Cole version but after looking at it in stores and seeing how cheaply made the buckles were (I had to struggle to even open the bag) I quickly scratched it off the list. Perhaps it was because of all this hunting and pecking that I knew exactly what the brown leather of this bag would look like so I wasn’t disappointed that the pictures on Amazon make it look a little lighter in color than it really is – I assume this is due to camera flash.

When this bag came I was really pleased with it. The space for a laptop is large enough even for my on-the-chunky-side Toshiba and the padding seems good enough to prevent minor drops. Even with the laptop in it I can still fit folders or a half inch binder in the same slot. The other slot is roomy enough to fit another binder or two in addition to a few books and also includes a slot which I think was intended for an iPad but which I will be using for my kindle on days when I need it. While I haven’t filled it to the brim it appears to stretch out a bit further than the pictures indicate which was something I was concerned about so that was a relief. The front slot has a place for my phone, three pen slots (not quite big enough for my Lamy Safaris but regular sized pens should have no issue), slots for credit or business cards, another larger slot which I’ll probably use for the Safaris, and the flap itself is wide enough to fit another book. On the back there is a zipper section which I probably won’t have much use for but if you need more space for papers or a smaller folder it will serve you well. The only issue I really foresee having is with fitting my computer charger in there on days when I need a lot of books for classes; however, if I take the time to wrap it up properly instead of just stuffing it in this will probably be easy to work around.

All and all this bag is great both in appearance and functionality and the price tag is awesome. When I was looking in stores there were bags of similar quality but smaller and with less compartments that were literally double the cost of this bag.
