After having used this for a few weeks now, I’ve identified a problem with it that’s compelling me to update this review and downgrade the rating. As you can see from the product photo, the placement of the strap is halfway between the top and bottom of the mask. Because that strap sits above your ear, it means that only about the lower one-third of the mask is actually covering your eyes. (Trace a line from the top of your ear to the front of your face and it probably hits around the middle of your eye; now picture this mask doing the same.) Case in point: when wearing this mask, it’s covering so much of my forehead it’s nearly touching my hairline. But the bottom of it is just barely covering my eyes; instead, it ends right at the edge of the “eye socket” on my face, which wastes more than half the mask on my forehead. This explains why many of these eye masks with this same shape have two thin straps to go above AND below the ear, thus centering the peanut shape of the mask over the eyes instead of floating way above it.

What this means in practice is no matter how tight you wear it, this mask is going to slip up your face overnight. I’ve found it on my forehead too many nights in a row to bother with it anymore, so I’m going to see if I can return this one (might be too late for me). I briefly considered bringing it to a tailor to move the strap an inch up, but this isn’t an option because the strap is sewn underneath the piping around the edge of the mask, not on top of it where it could be adjusted.

This is only barely clearing a 1-star rating due to the quality of the product. But unless your eyes are hella high up your forehead, I’d recommend avoiding this one.

    ORIGINAL REVIEW FOLLOWS ————–

I’ve tried at least six different sleep masks and this is the best I’ve used. Two of my old ones continued to bleed blue-black dye onto my pillows after every sleep, regardless of how long I washed or soaked them. One only had a cheap metal clip to adjust the strap tension. Another one’s strap (one of those with two thin straps) lost its elasticity and eventually snapped out of one side. The memory foam ones are too stiff and flex open when lying on your side. And some are simply uncomfortable. This one solved for ALL these issues. The elastic strap feels substantive, and adjusts with velcro. The black dye hasn’t bled onto the sheets one bit. The inside, which is not visible from the photos, is actually “fur-lined” with a sort of black velvety fabric and is very comfortable. And the shape holds to the face very well when sleeping on your side, letting in virtually no light. Granted I’ve only owned this mask a few days but so far I’m completely pleased with it, and assuming I find no future issues with it (with which I’ll update this review if so), I’ll absolutely buy this one again if/when it eventually falls apart on me.

Oh, but the earplugs are quite stiff and dense; I threw them out before their first use. But I knew I’d be throwing them out when I bought this, I was only looking for a sleep mask. (Better off using Hearos ear plugs which go in easier.)

This review is from: Samsonite Eye Mask With Ear Plugs (Apparel)
I ordered this to help me sleep during an 8-hour overnight flight from Miami to Brazil. The mask worked extremely well and was extremely comfortable with a smooth interior that is comfortable against my face and eyes. This was So worth the “investment”. I have a pretty large head and found that putting the velcro at just the edge made it big enough and didn’t bother me at all. I didn’t have any problems with sweaty face or discomfort that I’ve read about in other Amazon reviews of this and/or other masks. I’d definitely recommend this for plane and car travel. It might work very well for home use, too.

I used the earplugs for part of the trip, too. The earplugs work fine to block out a lot of airplane noise, though earplugs were no match for a very chatty woman with a slicing voice in the row just behind me (twice). They blocked out everything but do leave you with a hallow sound and feeling in your ears. That’s a personl comfort thing. The plugs allow full compression and return to original shape after being used. The earplug holder on the mask is convenient, too, After use, you probably want to clean them and/or put the whole thing in a ziplock bag.
