I bought this bag late last year but didn’t start using it until March 2017. High Sierra is the only brand I buy tote and messenger bag wise. I’ve only had to replace one tote, the first one I ever bought some 3 years ago. High sierra makes the sturdiest, biggest, high quality bags in my opinion. I have a tote for my laptop but wanted something I could carry with me daily. I call it my everyday bag. The most I had in this bag was a compact umbrella, small flashlight, random documents, an energy drink and 2 small pill bottles, nothing heavy at all. So imagine my surprise when I find that the patterned cloth is ripped and hanging off one side of the bag! I’m still trying to figure out how this happened. Anyway, I contacted Amazon and they said they’ll help me out if High Sierra doesn’t honor the warranty. We’ll see just how good their customer service is.

This review is from: High Sierra Shelby Tote (Sports)
I’ve been searching for a large affordable tote that is comfortable to carry and can withstand carrying shoes, a jacket, a book, water bottle, and lunch/snacks on the subway, on a daily basis. Usually when I carry all this, I use a backpack. But lately the backpack has been hurting my back and shoulders. I looked at the High Sierra Shelby Tote and read all the reviews and debated about buying this bag for about a month. I’m glad I finally made the purchase. What a nice tote bag! It is made out of quality material that has a textured/light pattern/design to it, which makes the black look more upscale and not just like a plain black tote. The outside cell phone pocket is deep enough for the smart phones that most of us carry today. The outside zippered compartment spans the entire length of the bag so it’s deep enough to hold various items. The side water bottle holder/pocket is also deep enough for my stainless steel water bottle. Inside there is a velcroed pocket which also is large enough and deep enough for my cell phone (smart phone size). There are several other open slots/pockets, one looks like a card holder. I love that it has a fob for my keys so that I no longer have to dig for them at the bottom of my bag. I don’t plan on carrying a laptop in the compartment made for that, but I like that there is a divider there and I probably will use that section to separate/store my book from the other stuff in my bag (I hate it when my pages get all bent up because my book has fallen to the bottom underneath the pile of stuff I have in my bag. This compartment should alleviate that problem) But if I were to carry a laptop, the compartment is definitely large enough for one. It’s just not padded, so you might want to put the laptop in a protective casing and then into the laptop compartment. The handles are just the right length to carry on my shoulders, with plenty of extra room for winter when I’ll be wearing a coat. I got black, so it looks professional and will look nice with anything I wear and will transfer easily from season to season. I would also like to respond to a review that complained about the High Sierra logo that is on the side of the bag. When I read that, I was hesitant to buy the bag as I don’t like it when brands are displayed on bags. I was worried that the lettering would be very large and make the bag look tacky. But I must say the logo does not look bad at all. It’s written in white lettering (medium sized) on the side of the bag, and doesn’t take away from the look of the bag. And since I got the tote in black, the white lettering looks nice against the black. Don’t know how it would look against one of the patterned totes though. I would say it’s no different than JanSport putting their name on their totes and backpacks. At least the High Sierra lettering is on the side and is not written on top of a blue patch like the typical Jansport logo is. All in all, I love the look and feel of the bag and I’m a pretty picky person. And the price is fantastic. I searched for a long time and looked at a lot of different brands, and all of the other bags I liked (ie. LeSportsac) were $50 and up. I didn’t want to spend that much on a everyday work tote. So thank you High Sierra for making a quality, affordable, attractive tote. I’ll come back and update this review after I use it to see if it withstands holding everything I need on my daily subway commutes to the city.
