Great travel bag, May 17, 2015

I have a number of travel bags already, including several from Dakine, but I really wanted a smallish carryon with wheels, so I ordered this. It’s great!

    Pros:
    1. I have always found Dakine products to be high quality, and this is no exception. All my Dakine bags are sturdy and well designed and will last for years.
    2. The outer fabric is sturdy nylon canvas; the inner fabric is lighter-weight nylon (well, maybe those are polyester, like the listing says). Trim is plastic faux leather in a few places (like the ends of the zipper, and the zipper-pull extensions).
    3. Pockets: Exterior full-length pocket, roughly half the height of the bag. Interior open stash pockets (three of them), running along one side of the bag, and zippered pocket running most of the length and again about half the height on the other side of the bag. (The long inner and outer pockets are on different sides of the bag, FWIW.)
    4. Full-length top zipper makes it easy to get into this bag. There are two pulls, so there’s some flexibility here.
    5. Bottom of the bag is sometimes called a “toboggan bottom”… it’s stiff and has ridges where the bag will rest when you put it down. Wheels are on one end of this, and the telescoping handle on the other. The tray that supports the bag covers the full bottom (of course), and about 3 inches up the sides on either end… so it’s like an elongated U shape, but not a bowl.
    6. The Dakine handles have a button in the middle to release for open/close; I’ve always found it easy to work.
    7. Wheels roll smoothly.

    Cons:
    1. My other Dakine bags have sort of a knob on the wheeled end to help support the bag on it’s end. It doesn’t always work and the bags are often tipsy (depending on how they’re loaded), but there’s nothing like that here. It would be handy.
    2. It might be handy to also have a shoulder strap for a bag like this to maximize flexibility.
    3. Technically, this is too big in one dimension as a carry-on bag, so be wary. Carry-on size is often defined as “9 inches x 14 inches x 22 inches”. I measure this as 20.5 x 12.5 for the base, so no problems there, but it’s kind of 14 inches high. You might want to be mindful of this when you pack it to try to keep things “lower” and “squarer”. I don’t expect anyone will hassle you since sometimes carry-on bags are defined by overall dimensions (e.g., 9+14+22 is 45 inches in total dimensions). And again, if you pack it low and broad instead of high and narrow, it should be no problem.

    Other:
    1. There is also a zipper on the bottom of the inside of the bag. I’m not entirely sure of the function of this. It would enable you to pack things right next to the frame – to hide them or to protect them… but the frame is irregularly shaped on the bottom (to hold the telescoping handle), so not papers or anything like that.
    2. The irregular shape of the interior bottom will bug some people… I often pad it up with socks or something so that my slacks or whatever won’t end up wrinkled.

This is a great travel bag, and I do think the only potential gotcha is that it’s technically too high for a carry-on bag, again, depending on how you pack it. And of course if you’re not flying, it’s just a great weekend bag.

Love this bag!! I was looking for a carry-on duffel with wheels and a cute design and got everything I wanted in this bag. I have used it on several 3-5 day trips and am able to fit in 3-4 pairs of shoes/sandals and a bunch of different outfits (I’m kind of an over-packer). Do keep in mind that I’m writing this during the summer and it would probably fit less heavy clothing and boots. I used to carry around a large LeSportSac weekender bag which I also loved, but being able to roll the bag on wheels makes traveling so much easier.

This is a great size, easy to carry or wheel, and it is lightweight to begin with, which is great for keeping luggage manageable. Also, this bag fit perfectly into the overhead compartment on an airplane.
